The short answer
No, you should not drink dehumidifier water. It is not potable — meaning it does not meet the EPA's drinking water safety standards under the Safe Drinking Water Act. It looks clear, it's essentially the same chemistry as distilled water for the H₂O portion, and it's tempting to assume it's clean. It isn't.

Why dehumidifier water isn't potable
Four contamination sources combine to make tank water unsuitable for drinking. None of them are deal-breakers individually, but together they put the water well outside the EPA's drinking water standards.
1. Metal leaching from coils
Dehumidifier evaporator coils are typically copper or aluminum, with brazed joints that may contain trace amounts of lead in older units. Condensing water sits in contact with these metals long enough to pick up dissolved metal ions. Concentrations are low — usually well below acute toxicity thresholds — but consistently above EPA Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) goals for some metals, especially with consumer-grade units that weren't engineered for water purity.
2. Airborne contamination
A dehumidifier pulls room air across its coils. Everything in that air — dust, pollen, mold spores, bacterial particles, pet dander, cooking aerosols, off-gassed VOCs from furniture and paint — ends up dissolved or suspended in the condensate water. In a typical home, this includes detectable mold spore counts that, while not harmful to breathe in normal concentrations, can multiply in the warm tank water.
3. Bacterial growth in the tank
Standing warm water plus organic material plus a humid environment equals bacterial growth. Per CDC guidance on biofilm formation in wet appliance reservoirs, bacterial counts in standing dehumidifier tanks can climb by orders of magnitude within 24–48 hours. The slimy film you sometimes see on tank walls — pink, black, or grayish — is biofilm. The water sitting in that film contains whatever's growing in it.
4. No treatment, no testing
Municipal tap water is treated for biological contaminants, filtered for particulates, regularly tested for metals and chemicals, and monitored by state and federal regulators under the Safe Drinking Water Act. Dehumidifier water has none of that. It's never been treated, never been tested, and isn't designed to be consumed. The absence of safety infrastructure matters as much as the presence of contaminants — there's no system telling you when something has gone wrong.
Dehumidifier water vs distilled water
The confusion is understandable. Both are produced by condensing water vapor. Both look identical in a glass. The difference is in the process:

What you can use dehumidifier water for
Several non-potable uses are genuinely fine. None of them involve food contact, drinking, or anything ingestible by humans or pets.
- Watering non-edible houseplants and ornamental outdoor plants. Trace metals don't accumulate in plant tissue at levels that affect plant health for occasional watering.
- Steam irons. The low mineral content prevents scale buildup. Many users prefer it for this reason.
- Topping off car batteries. The trace contaminants don't matter at battery-cell scale.
- Pool or hot tub top-up. Chlorine treatment in the pool handles biological concerns.
- Cleaning floors, windows, mirrors. The low-mineral content actually leaves fewer streaks than tap water.
- Toilet flushing during water shortages or emergencies. Manual tank fill or pour-flush — safe and uses water you'd otherwise dump.
- Outdoor non-edible landscaping irrigation. Same logic as houseplants.
What you should never use dehumidifier water for
- Drinking. Don't drink it. Don't make ice from it. Don't use it in baby bottles or formula.
- Cooking. Boiling pasta, making soup, brewing coffee or tea — anything where the water enters the food.
- Pet bowls. Cats, dogs, birds, rabbits, and small mammals accumulate metals over time. Use tap water for pets.
- Edible plants. Vegetables, herbs, fruit trees. Metals can accumulate in plant tissue and reach what you eat.
- Aquarium fish. Despite the low mineral content, the trace metals and uncontrolled biology make it riskier than tap water (which can be safely dechlorinated). Use RO or distilled water for aquariums.
- Humidifiers. Don't pour dehumidifier water into a humidifier. The humidifier will aerosolize whatever's in the water and put it right back into your room's air.
- Medical or first-aid uses. Wound cleaning, contact lens rinsing, anything sterile — never.
Tank cleaning and bacteria
Even if you only use dehumidifier water for non-potable purposes (or pour it directly down the drain), the tank itself needs regular cleaning. Standing warm water is a bacterial growth medium, and biofilm buildup affects the unit's humidistat accuracy over time.
The standard maintenance schedule:
- Daily during heavy use: Empty the tank. Don't let water sit overnight if you can avoid it.
- Every 2 weeks: Rinse the tank with mild dish soap and warm water. Air dry before reinstalling.
- Monthly: Wipe the tank interior with a 50/50 white vinegar-water solution to inhibit biofilm. Rinse thoroughly.
- If you see pink/black film, slime, or smell mustiness: Deep clean immediately with vinegar, dry completely, and inspect more often going forward.
