Why is my dehumidifier not collecting water?

Most of the time, your dehumidifier is working perfectly — and the answer is one you don't want to hear: the air is already dry, or your target setting is above current room humidity, or the room is too cold for the compressor to condense effectively. About 90% of "not collecting water" complaints resolve in 10 minutes of diagnosis. This guide walks the causes in order of likelihood and gives the DIY fix sequence.

The short answer

The single most common cause is ambient humidity already at or below your target setting. The unit thinks the job is done and idles the compressor — exactly what it's designed to do. The fix isn't a fix; it's confirming with a separate hygrometer that the room is actually as humid as you think it is.

The eight causes, in order of likelihood:

  1. Ambient humidity at or below target setting (~60% of cases)
  2. Room temperature too cold for compressor operation (under 60°F)
  3. Dirty filter restricting airflow
  4. Stuck float switch (unit thinks tank is full)
  5. Frosted evaporator coil (see our icing-up guide)
  6. Blocked intake or exhaust
  7. Failed fan motor (no airflow)
  8. Refrigerant leak (rare — usually with gradual capacity decline)

The 10-minute diagnostic sequence

Run these checks in order. Most users find the cause within 3–4 steps.

  1. Verify actual room humidity with a separate hygrometer. Don't rely on the dehumidifier's built-in sensor — they're notoriously inaccurate (5–15 percentage points off is common). Place a $15 digital hygrometer across the room. Wait 30 minutes for it to stabilize. Compare to your target setting.
  2. Verify actual room temperature. If the room is under 60°F, compressor capacity drops sharply. Under 41°F, the unit may run but produce almost no water due to coil frosting. See the temperature section below.
  3. Set target humidity to 30% (minimum) for 30 minutes. This forces the compressor to run continuously. If it cycles on and produces water in this test, your normal setting is just below room humidity — adjust your normal target lower.
  4. Empty and reseat the tank. Lift the tank fully out, dump any water, dry the rim, and push it back in firmly. A misseated tank trips the full-tank float switch even when empty. This single step fixes a surprising fraction of complaints.
  5. Pull the filter and check it against a bright light. If you can't see daylight through the mesh, it's clogged. Clean per our filter cleaning guide.
  6. Check for ice on the evaporator coil. Look through the rear grille at the coils visible behind the fan. Light frost is normal at startup; visible ice means a separate problem (see icing-up guide).
  7. Confirm fan is running. The fan should run steadily anytime the unit is plugged in and turned on. If you don't feel air at the exhaust, the fan motor has failed.
  8. Listen for compressor operation. 5–10 minutes after a cold start, the compressor should kick on with a noticeable hum and slight increase in unit weight (compressor pulling refrigerant). If the fan runs but the compressor never starts, the compressor or its capacitor has failed.

The 8 causes, ranked by likelihood

1. Humidity already at target (~60% of cases)

The unit is working correctly. Indoor humidity drops naturally when outdoor temperatures cool, HVAC runs, or weather changes. A dehumidifier set to 50% RH in a room currently at 48% RH won't run at all. This is by design — running a compressor against a target it's already met wastes electricity and wears the unit. Verify with an external hygrometer.

2. Room temperature below 60°F (~15% of cases)

Compressor dehumidifiers depend on warm air flowing across cold coils. Below 60°F, the coils approach freezing and condensation efficiency drops sharply. Capacity may fall by 50% at 55°F and by 80% at 45°F. The unit is running, but it's pulling almost no water.

3. Dirty filter restricting airflow (~8% of cases)

Reduced airflow means less heat transfer to the coils, which can drop coil temperature below freezing even at warm room temperatures. The unit ices over (collecting frost instead of liquid water) or simply moves too little air to dehumidify effectively.

4. Stuck float switch (~5% of cases)

A small mechanical float inside the tank rises with the water level. When the float reaches its maximum position, a switch trips and stops the compressor (to prevent overflow). If the float gets stuck in the up position — debris, biofilm buildup, or a misseated tank — the unit thinks it's permanently full and refuses to make water.

Fix: Lift the tank out, identify the float (usually a styrofoam or plastic piece in the center of the tank), wiggle it to confirm it moves freely, clean any biofilm with mild soap, reseat the tank firmly.

5. Frosted evaporator coil (~5% of cases)

When the coil ices over, condensing water freezes on the surface instead of dripping into the tank. You may see ice through the rear grille. The unit runs continuously but no water collects.

6. Blocked intake or exhaust (~3% of cases)

Items pushed against the unit, curtains hanging over it, or an enclosed cabinet trap airflow. Without air movement across the coils, no condensation happens.

Fix: Move the unit at least 12 inches from any wall or obstruction. Confirm the exhaust isn't pointed into a corner.

7. Failed fan motor (~2% of cases)

If the fan blades aren't turning, no air flows across the coils. The compressor may run, but with stagnant air the coils quickly drop below freezing and the unit either ices up or simply makes no water.

Fix: Unplug, manually rotate fan blades to check for binding, listen for fan operation when plugged back in. Fan motor replacement is typically $30–$60 and a moderate-difficulty DIY job. Or replace the unit.

8. Refrigerant leak (~2% of cases)

Slow refrigerant loss reduces the cooling capacity of the evaporator coil. The unit runs continuously but moisture removal capacity drops 30–80%. Often accompanied by ice forming at warm room temperatures (because remaining refrigerant overcools the smaller area it occupies), or a hissing sound near the compressor.

Fix: Not a DIY repair. Refrigerant work requires EPA Section 608 certification. Typical repair cost: $200–$400. For most consumer units, replacement is more economical.

When to replace instead of repair

The economics of dehumidifier repair are unforgiving. Modern Energy Star v5.0 50-pint units cost $250–$400 new and last 5–8 years with reasonable care. Any repair over $150 — refrigerant work, compressor replacement, control board swap — usually doesn't make sense.

The decision rule: repair if the fix is under $50 OR the unit is under 2 years old and in warranty. Replace otherwise.
